White kitchen cabinets have forever remained a sought after look; they have never gone out of style .The brightness, clean lines, and design versatility they offer will always keep them as a popular choice. However, traditionally painted white cabinets began to fall out of favor in the in the late 80’s as we moved towards a more “maintenance free” lifestyle. The upkeep of white paint on an often “used and abused” surface just required too much attention to keep them looking clean and new. With the introduction of thermo foil solid white cabinets became more durable, easily cleanable, and lessresistant to visible nicks and scratches.

By heat-fusing a very thin layer of “RTF” (rigid vinyl film) to a door or drawer cabinetmakers were able to create an ultra-smooth, uniformly colored surface. This helped to avoid any variations and inconsistencies that frequently occurred with old-fashioned painted cabinets. The thermo foil surface is tougher and easier to clean than paint. It is offered as a finishing option on anything from the budget-priced lines all the way through to top-of-the-line custom products.

Melamine, or more properly called melamine resin, is a synthetic polymer used for numerous applications such as dry-erase boards, floor tiles, kitchenware, fabrics, commercial air filters, and of course cabinetry. It is fire resistant and extremely heat tolerant. It is a very stable structure when formed; yet easily molded while warm.

Unlike thermo foils, which more closely resemble a painted surface, melamine cabinets do have less of an authentic look. They are most popular for commercial settings such as a work place kitchen, or rental apartments; though they are certainly a viable alternative to more costly offerings.

If you like the clean crisp look of white cabinets but desire something a little softer in tone you may want to consider a Frost or Ivory finish. The Frost finish is available on Oak cabinets, the Ivory is offered on Maple cabinets, and either can be glazed to add beauty, depth, and presentation to your overall look.
